Attention, this text is only for the synth-nerds among you I would like to tell you a bit about my ideas and how i create my sounds used in "Ice Ages".
Firstly, I would like to mention that none of the sounds on the new album (as well as on the previous album) are from the real world. By that I mean that I do not use recorded sounds (samples), but generate them all with simple waves (mostly sawtooth or random waves), which I then edit by intensive frequency-modulation or ring-modulation. No matter if it sounds like a deep thunder, a metallic hammer, or some atmospheric layers, all sounds are generated by simple waves and same synth, and are no recorded samples.
In order to have a synthesizer which perfectly suits my needs, I decided long ago to construct my own virtual synthesizer using the analog synthesizer software called "Reaktor 6". This means that i create the right oscillators, "wiring" them in the way I want them to, modifying those waves via modulations using different signal paths, and placing the controls the way they make the most sense to me.
In this way, I am completely independent of the "reality" and can turn any sound used smoothly from a smooth layer sound, to an aggressive noise sound - and vice versa.
The picture in this post shows the surface of my own constructed synthesizer and with the link you can download it and try it out if you have installed "Reaktor 6".
